Furthering its mission of nurturing local artists, the Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC) will showcase the work of ten of the most widely recognized women artists in Miami. Timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Art Basel Miami Beach, Woman to Woman highlights these artists’ contributions to developing Miami’s vibrant art scene long before and since the fair began to attract international attention. Just as recent museum exhibitions have spotlighted 20th century artists whose achievements have often been under-recognized, the Bakehouse Art Complex is proud to present a unique perspective on the creative process of women making significant artwork in Miami today. In a time when almost everything is undergoing a radical reassessment, from international banking to book publishing to journalism and even to gender-specific pronouns, so too are concepts of contemporary art changing. With “Woman to Woman,” the BAC positions itself at the epicenter of this conversation about how contemporary art is evolving in Miami and beyond. This exhibit presents never-before-seen collaborative artworks in a range of media, some incorporating text and performance, to stimulate dialogue among artists and viewers.
In early 2011, five rising talents were chosen by the Bakehouse curatorial committee, comprised of well- respected visual arts professionals in Miami. These artists – Elizabeth Cerejido, Julie Davidow, Felice Grodin, Vickie Pierre and Samantha Salzinger – were each asked to choose another woman in South Florida with whom to collaborate on a new artwork commissioned for “Woman to Woman.” The pairings are: Cerejido with Mia Leonin, Davidow with Carol Prusa, Grodin with Michelle Weinberg, Pierre with Sara Stites, and Salzinger with Francie Bishop Good. To provide additional context for the works they have made together, each artist will also display selections from her own oeuvre.
Further reflecting this collaborative ethos, “Woman to Woman” is organized and curated by the programming committee composed of the art critics Margery Gordon, Adriana Herrera and Elisa Turner, along with Art Circuits Publisher Liana Perez, and Lauren Wagner, Director of Exhibitions at BAC.
Program

Breakfast & Artist Studios Open House
Guests will be greeted with a homemade breakfast spread created by BAC Artists and will have the opportunity to tour over 60 local working artist studios all under one roof!
January 19, 7 pm
Panel Discussion with Woman to Woman artists
A catalog and series of public programs will accompany this exhibit. On January 19th, the BAC will present a panel discussion with the artists of “Woman to Woman” to explore the topic of creative collaboration.
ABOUT THE BAKEHOUSE ART COMPLEX /BAC:
The Bakehouse Art Complex is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to attracting emerging and mid- career artists in South Florida to a workplace that provides affordable studios, exhibition galleries, and professional development opportunities. The artists, who are juried-in tenants, come from many different states and countries bringing with them many different intellectual, social and artistic experiences. By attracting and involving new audiences into the contemporary and culturally enriching world of the visual arts, the BAC continues to be an accessible vital resource to the diverse and dynamic South Florida art community and its patrons. The BAC facility is located in the internationally renowned Wynwood Arts District, a designated area of Miami comprising more than 50 galleries, alternative spaces, private collections and museums.
